My Life Among the Serial Killers - Helen Morrison - Audio Book

My Life Among the Serial Killers - Helen Morrison : Dr. Helen Morrison has profiled more than eighty serial killers around the world. What she has learned about them will shatter every assumption you've ever had about the most notorious killers known to man.

Dr. Helen Morrison, a leading expert on serial killers, has spent as many as four hundred hours alone with depraved murderers. In My Life Among the Serial Killers, Dr. Morrison relates how she profiled Richard Otto Macek, who chewed on his victims' body parts, stalked Dr. Morrison, then believed she was his wife. She conducted the last interview with Ed Gein, the inspiration for Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. John Wayne Gacy, the clown-obsessed killer of young men, sent her crazed Christmas cards, and gave her his paintings as presents. Dr. Morrison has received letters from killers, read their diaries and journals, evaluated crime scenes, testified at their trials, and studied photos of the gruesome carnage. She has interviewed the families of the victims, and the spouses and parents of the killers.

In this audio book we understand how Dr. Morrison tried to discover the reasons why serial killers feel the need to kill and how they choose their victim. Fascinating.

Saving Fish from Drowning - Amy Tan - Audio Book

Saving Fish from Drowning - Amy Tan :

A pious man explained to his followers: "It is evil to take lives and noble to save them. Each day I pledge to save a hundred lives. I drop my net in the lake and scoop out a hundred fishes. I place the fishes on the bank, where they flop and twirl. 'Don't be scared,' I tell those fishes. 'I am saving you from drowning. ' Soon enough, the fishes grow calm and lie still. Yet, sad to say, I am always too late. The fishes expire. And because it is evil to waste anything, I take those dead fishes to market and I sell them for a good price. With the money I receive, I buy more nets so I can save more fishes." - Anonymous

With her signature "idiosyncratic, sympathetic characters, haunting images, historical complexity, significant contemporary themes, and suspenseful mystery" (Los Angeles Times), Amy Tan spins a provocative and mesmerizing tale about the mind and the heart of the individual, the actions we choose, the moral questions we might ask ourselves, and above all, the deeply personal answers we seek when happy endings are seemingly impossible.

Have you ever read an Amy Tan's book? If not, start "to read" some of her novels with this audio-book : it's pure delight.

Newjack - Ted Conover - Audio Book

Newjack - Ted Conover :

Newjack: Guarding Sing Sing is the story of Conover's rookie year as a guard at Sing Sing. It is a nerve-jangling account of his passage into the storied prison and the culture of its guards - both fresh-faced "newjacks" like Conover and brutally hardened veterans. As he struggles to be a good officer, Conover angers inmates, dodges blows, works to balance decency with toughness, and participates in prison rituals - strip frisks, cell searches, cell "extractions" - that exact a toll on inmates and officers alike.

"Newjack is an astonishing work by a gifted - and dedicated - journalist. Ted Conover takes us into the dangerous, sad, amusing and instructive soul of one of America's best known prisons."

I found this true story hard enough when I read it, but when I happen to have the opportunity to "hear" it , narrated by Ted Conover himself , I realised that every move, every word, etc. have had their weight !

Are You There Alone - Suzanne O'Malley - True Crime Story Audio Book

Are You There Alone - Suzanne O'Malley - True Crime Story Audio Book : In the tradition of In Cold Blood, The Executioner's Song, and A Civil Action, Suzanne O'Malley exposes the human mystery of the most horrifying crime in recent history and the legal drama surrounding it.

As a journalist, the author began covering the murders of Noah, John, Paul, Luke, and Mary Yates hours after their mother Andrea Yates drowned them in their suburban Houston home in June 2001. To answer critical questions, investigative reporter Suzanne O'Malley interviewed or witnessed the sworn testimony of nearly two hundred people, including Yates herself, her husband Rusty Yates, and their families.

In "Are You There Alone?" O'Malley makes an important contribution to our understanding the significance and ramifications of mental health issues within the criminal justice system.

This story is already in itself terrible when you read it but when you hear the audio book it's even more touching.
